When a module fails, replacing it isn't always the answer

RF systems stay in service for decades. When a receiver, amplifier or transmitter fails, the original manufacturer may no longer support it, new spares can carry long lead times, and a full replacement can mean redesign, re-qualification and significant cost.
In many cases the unit you already own can be repaired, refurbished and returned to specification. That is why RF Com opened its own repair and refurbishment service in 2024.
The most cost-effective spare is often the one you already own. Our job is to get it back into service, working to its original specification.

Why repair instead of replace

Lower cost

Repair is often a fraction of the price of a new unit or a redesign.

Faster return to service

Avoid long lead times on new builds and replacement spares.

Longer system life

Extend the working life of proven, qualified equipment.

No re-qualification

A repaired unit keeps its original form, fit and function.

Beats obsolescence

Keep modules running when spares are no longer made.

More sustainable

Repair reduces waste and supports sustainability targets.

Our own experts. Our own lab.

Your equipment is diagnosed and repaired by engineers who understand RF and microwave systems, not passed down a chain of subcontractors.

Technical experts

Our repair engineers have hands-on experience of RF and microwave modules from legacy airborne radar, electronic warfare and communications systems. They work from your original test procedures where these exist, and reverse engineer the design where they do not.

A fully equipped lab

Our lab is set up for fault-finding, repair and characterisation of RF and microwave modules, including vector network analysis across standard waveguide bands, backed by our partnership with Anritsu Test and Measurement.

What the facility provides

  • Diagnosis: fault-finding and a view on repair viability before work begins
  • Repair and re-work: component-level repair of RF and microwave modules
  • Refurbishment: returning worn or aged units to full specification
  • Characterisation: VNA and RF performance testing against the original specification
  • Re-qualification: re-test to original test procedures, with environmental testing via accredited partners
  • Reverse engineering: documentation and test procedures for items with no surviving design data
  • Low-volume production: repaired or re-manufactured modules in batches to programme schedules

What we repair

Module type Typical work
Demodulators Fault diagnosis, component replacement, alignment and performance verification
Receivers Repair of RF front ends and signal paths, sensitivity and gain checks, re-alignment
Sum and difference mixers Repair, re-work and characterisation of monopulse and comparator networks
Backward / forward power monitors Coupler and detector repair, calibration of power readings
Amplifiers LNA, power and driver amplifier repair; gain, output power and stability testing
Oscillators Repair and re-tuning; frequency, power and phase noise verification
Transmitters Repair of transmit chains and sub-assemblies; output power and spectral checks
Waveguide networks and assemblies Repair, re-work and VNA characterisation
Custom microwave sub-assemblies Repair and low-volume re-manufacture of bespoke units
Not sure if your unit is repairable? Send us the part number and the fault, and we'll tell you whether repair is likely to be viable before you ship anything.

From failed unit to back in service

Step 1

Send us the details

Part number, system, fault description and any drawings or test procedures.
Step 2

Initial assessment

We advise on repair viability, indicative cost and timescale before you ship.
Step 3

Receipt and inspection

Your unit is booked in, inspected, photographed and its condition recorded.
Step 4

Diagnosis and quotation

We find the fault and send a fixed quotation. No work starts without your approval.
Step 5

Repair and refurbishment

Faulty and aged components replaced; the unit re-worked and re-aligned.
Step 6

Test and re-qualification

Tested against the original specification or test procedure.
Step 7

Return with documentation

Returned with test results and traceability documentation, ready for service.
Typical repair batches take 4-16 weeks depending on complexity, parts availability and test requirements. We always confirm a timescale with your quotation.

Who we support

Defence

Repair and re-qualification of radar, electronic warfare and communications modules, working to MOD, DEF STAN and prime contractor quality requirements, under NDA and with export control handled.

Aerospace

Airborne radar and avionics RF modules repaired to original test procedures, so units return to service without redesign.

Satellite ground stations

Receivers, transmitters, amplifiers, oscillators and waveguide assemblies back on air faster than sourcing replacements.

Test, research and communications

Repair of RF modules in test racks, labs and fielded equipment.

Backed by 25 years of defence supply

  • ISO 9001:2015, JOSCAR, ITAR registered broker, Cyber Essentials, TRACE and AECA compliant
  • NDA as standard from the start of every engagement
  • Original test procedures used wherever they exist
  • Full traceability of parts and test results for every unit
  • No minimum quantity: single units are as welcome as batches

Repair sits alongside our obsolescence sourcing and Form-Fit-Function replacement work, so if a module can’t be economically repaired, we can move straight to finding stock, a qualified alternative or a drop-in replacement. One partner, one recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I know if my unit can be repaired?

Send us the part number and a description of the fault. We’ll give you an initial view on repair viability, cost and timescale before you ship anything.

  • How long does a repair take?

Typical repair batches take 4-16 weeks depending on complexity, parts availability and test requirements. We confirm a timescale with every quotation.

  • Will I get a quote before work starts?

Yes. After diagnosis we send a fixed quotation, and no repair work starts without your approval.

  • Do you need the original test procedures?

They help, but they are not essential. Where no design data survives, our engineers can reverse engineer the unit and create test documentation.

  • What happens if a unit can't be repaired?

We’ll tell you, and recommend the next best route: original or surplus stock, a qualified alternative, or a Form-Fit-Function replacement.

  • Do you repair single units?

Yes. There is no minimum quantity, and we can also handle low-volume batches for spares pools.

  • Can you handle export-controlled equipment?

Yes. We are a registered ITAR broker and work under NDA as standard.

Got a failed or ageing module?

Tell us the part number and the fault. We'll tell you whether it can be repaired, what it will cost and how long it will take, with a direct answer within 24 hours.
